Frequently Asked Questions

Good questions. Questionable characters.

A few things to know before you invite a Ripley Problem into your home, wardrobe, or otherwise respectable life.

What’s the difference between an original and a print?

An original is the actual, one-of-a-kind artwork made by Brian Ripley. Mixed-media paintings are built by hand on canvas, while dimensional pieces incorporate materials such as layered wood and constructed elements.

A giclée print is a fine-art reproduction of an artwork, rather than the original painted surface.

What makes the prints limited edition?

Limited edition prints belong to a numbered run rather than an unlimited supply. Each is hand signed and numbered and includes a certificate of authenticity.

How are the giclée prints made?

The limited edition giclées use Epson archival ink on Epson hot-pressed archival paper to reproduce layered colors, fine marks, and detail.

They ship directly from the artist. They are NOT drop shipped from a print on demand service. All prints are printed here in Asheville NC. No mysterious warehouse full of monkeys. They’re busy elsewhere.

Does my artwork include a certificate of authenticity?

Original paintings and limited edition prints include a certificate of authenticity. Check individual listings for details about other types of work.

Is the frame included?

Unless a listing specifically says otherwise, frames and mats shown in photographs are styling inspiration only and are not included. Check the artwork’s listing before choosing your own frame.

Will the colors look exactly like they do on my screen?

Not necessarily. Screen settings and the lighting in your room can affect how colors appear. Allow for some variation between a glowing screen and the physical artwork.

How should I care for my artwork?

Display artwork indoors, away from direct sunlight, damp conditions, and sources of heat. Avoid touching the painted or printed surface, and never apply household cleaners to it.

Handle paper prints along the edges with clean, dry hands, and consider protective framing with archival materials. Dimensional works may have delicate or projecting parts; never lift them by an attached element.

The characters can have questionable habits. Your handling shouldn’t.

How should I wash my T-shirt?

Follow the care label on your particular shirt first. For a gentle routine that helps protect the graphic, turn the shirt inside out and wash cold with similar colors and mild detergent.

Avoid bleach, harsh stain treatments on the graphic, and scrubbing directly over the print.

Can I put my T-shirt in the dryer?

Follow the garment’s care label. Air drying is a gentle option for protecting the graphic and reducing heat exposure. If the label permits tumble drying, use low heat and avoid overdrying.

If ironing is needed, follow the label and never place the iron directly on the printed design.

Wear something weird. Wash it sensibly.

Where can I find sizing and material details?

Check each product listing for available sizes, materials, and measurements. For shirts, compare the listed measurements with a favorite shirt you already own rather than relying on the size name alone.

Who ships my order?

Original paintings, limited edition prints, and the artist-made T-shirts described in their listings ship directly from the artist. Other merchandise may have different fulfillment arrangements, so check the specific product information.

How do I buy a piece that’s currently at a gallery?

For pieces listed as being on display at a gallery, contact the artist directly to discuss current availability and purchasing.
